Commissioner, Precinct 1 - Jack Dawson

I am currently in my third term as Precinct 1 Commissioner.  Starting in 1996, I have been on the ballot eight (8) times and this term of office will conclude at the end of 2008.  My father told me long ago, "Jack, always follow your goal and dreams, but, be sure to enjoy the trip along the way".  What a pleasure to end up my working career with a rewarding job like this as Commissioner in Comal County, Texas.....

Biography

Life long Texan – Born in Houston.

Graduated from John H. Reagan High School.

Accepted a football scholarship to the University of Tulsa, were I graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in mathematics and accounting.

Played one year in the Continental Professional Football League with the Denver Broncos’ farm club.

Recruited by Shell Oil – back in Houston – as a Computer Programmer.

Spent several years traveling and consolidating Shell’s Personnel/Payroll worldwide operations into Houston’s head office.

Advanced to Systems Analysis Manager and started the Personnel/Payroll in Shell’s Saudi Arabia operations.

Meet Bonnie at Shell and we have been happily married for 27 years(2002).

We took early vested pension from Shell and moved to Comal County in 1976.

Bonnie and I had attained real estate licenses and went to work for a realtor at Canyon Lake.

When the Canyon Lake Golf Club opened, we sold property for the developers.

Bonnie obtained her Real Estate Brokers Licenses and we built and opened what is now Dawson Realty, which is managed by Bonnie Dawson.

Besides working with Bonnie in the Real Estate Office, I started our subdivision’s first homeowners association.

I was the first President of the Golf Club’s Men's Golf Association.

Served two years as an elected Board of Director for the Canyon Lake Volunteer Fire Department. Then served two years as the Board’s President. During my Presidency, we were able to get a vote of the citizens to form what is now known as Fire District #4 and Emergency Services District #2.

The Comal County Commissioners’ Court appointed me a Board Commissioner as one of the Charter Members on the Emergency Services District #2. There I served as Secretary.

During the fall of 1995, Commissioner ‘Jumbo’ Evans asked me to run for his position, as he was retiring. After many phone calls urging me to take this step and only after long discussions with Bonnie, did I decide to seek the position of Comal County Commissioner Precinct One(1).

I campaigned in 1996, with 4 opponents in the March Primary, and a run-off in April, which I prevailed and had a Democratic opponent in the General Election in November.

The rest is history and I am currently in my second term as Commissioner Precinct One(1), and plan to seek a third term before I retire.

Comal County has been honored over the pass several years by a number of State Agencies as being one of the Best County Governments in the State of Texas. I am proud to be a part of the leadership that is recognized in this positive way.
