APPLICANT STANDARDS

The Comal County Sheriff’s Office has adopted the following standards for the selection process of new applicants for Corrections Officers, Sheriff’s Deputies, Reserve Deputies, and Communications Officers as indicated.  Our policies and standards will conform to affirmative action guidelines.  ALL applicants must have a valid Texas Drivers License.

Applicants must comply with licensing requirements of the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement Standards and Education (TCLEOSE) and as required for the applicable posted job position/description.

 

The applicant shall comply with the standards of the Comal County Sheriff’s Office; 

1.       All law enforcement applicants (Deputy, Reserve Deputy, Corrections, and Turnkey) must be 21 years of age as of the date of hire.

2.       Minimum required is a valid basic certificate from TCLEOSE for all Deputy Sheriff and Reserve Deputy positions.

3.       Pass a vision test of 20/20 with each eye through corrective action for all Deputy Sheriff and Reserve Deputy positions.

4.       Obtain Basic Corrections Officer TCLEOSE certification within one year from date of employment for all Corrections Officers (provided by Comal County).

5.       Obtain Basic Telecommunication Officer TCLEOSE certification within one year from date of employment for all Communications Officers (provided by Comal County).

6.       Obtain Texas Criminal Information Center and National Crime Information Center certification within one year from date of employment for all Communications Officers (provided by Comal County).

CHARACTER:

All applicants must be of good moral character and habits. Any applicant, who has been charged or convicted of a Class B Misdemeanor or a crime of moral turpitude within the last 10 years, shall be disqualified and not eligible for hiring. Anyone charged, or convicted of a Class A Misdemeanor or above shall not be eligible for hiring.

TRAFFIC RECORDS: (not applicable to Communications Officers)

1.       Applicant must not have been convicted for four (4) or more hazardous traffic violations within 12 months preceding date of application. 

2.       Applicant must not have been convicted of seven (7) or more hazardous traffic violations within 24 months preceding date of application.

3.       Applicant must not have been convicted as a habitual violator within the last five (5) years preceding date of application.

4.       Applicant must not have been convicted of FSRA (Failure to Stop and Render Aid).

5.       Applicant must not have been convicted of DWLS (Driving While Licensed Suspended) within the last five (5) years.

Applicant must not currently be on probation for any traffic offense.
