POSITION TITLE: Corrections Officer (County Jail)

JOB SUMMARY: This individual is responsible for the general supervision of inmates as assigned to his/her duty station, the preparation of incident, booking data and other prisoner-related reports, the security and safety of inmates and the facility. Other duties to include feeding prisoners; supervising the daily cleaning of the facility; classifying prisoners; taking fingerprints; moving prisoners throughout facility; handling violent inmates/physical confrontation; handling intoxicated and/or prisoners under influence of drugs or other substances; handling mentally ill prisoners; observation of suicidal inmates and responding to such attempts; responding to other medical emergencies; responding to fire alarms/fires and safely evacuating prisoners. Shift work is required.

QUALIFICATIONS: High School diploma or GED (copy required with application). One (1) year of experience is desirable. Must be 21 at time of hire and have a valid Texas driver’s license. Certification as a jailer by the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement Officer Standards and Education preferred or must be obtained within the first year of hire. Must pass: written test; physical agility test, criminal history/background check; drug screen, physical exam and psychological exam.

SALARY: $ 30,118.40

SUMMARY

This position requires a thorough knowledge of jail procedures. Has daily contact with the public and is for the general supervision of inmates as assigned in his/her duty station. Is responsible for the preparation of incident, booking data and other prisoner-related reports. The individual is responsible for the security and safety of the inmates and the facility.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED

Works under the general supervision of the Sergeant.

SUPERVISION EXERCISED

None generally.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. Duties include the following:

1. Booking incoming and outgoing prisoners.

2. Feeding prisoners.

3. Supervising the daily cleaning of the facility.

4. Maintaining jail security.

5. Processing of incoming and outgoing prisoners.

6. Classifying prisoners as required.

7. Taking fingerprints.

8. Moving prisoners throughout facility.

9. Logging and writing incident reports.

10.Handle violent inmates, to include physical confrontation.

11.Handle intoxicated and or prisoners under influence of drugs or other substances.

12.Handle mentally ill prisoners.

13.Observe suicidal inmates and respond to suicide attempts and medical emergencies.

14.Respond to fire alarms/fight fires and evacuate prisoners in a safe secure manner.

MANDATORY QUALIFICATIONS:

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

A high school diploma or equivalent is required.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATION

A valid driver’s license and certification as a Jailer by the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement Officer Standards and Education (TCLEOSE) is required within the first year of hire.

DESIRED MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

LANGUAGE SKILLS

Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos. Ability to write simple correspondence. Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to customers, clients, and other employees of the organization.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS

Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fraction, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.

REASONING ABILITY

Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.

OTHER SKILLS AND ABILITIES

The individual should possess a thorough working knowledge of jail procedures and practices. One (1) year of experience is desirable. Other specialized job requirements include fingerprinting and computer use.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential duties of this job. Employee must be able to drag or lift 185 pounds plus with and without a 35 pound air rescue pack strapped on the employees back. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions of this job.

Must be physically fit and pass a physical exam by a medical doctor. In order to meet the physical demands of the job (handling of violent prisoners, etc.) must have full use of extremities.
