Carl G. Iwonski was an artist who contributed greatly to our knowledge of the
appearance of the early settlement of New Braunfels, as well as its citizens. This
is his portrait view of the infant city, drawn in 1857, showing the Sophienburg at right
and the German Protestant Church with its (onion tower) in the center.
