NEWS RELEASE COMAL COUNTY OFFICIALS SALARIES ARE FAR BEHIND OTHERS

March 18, 2009, NEW BRAUNFELS, TX: The New Braunfels Newspaper today reported that Comal County’s elected officials make significantly less money than their counterparts around the state according to a salary survey commissioned by Hays County in January 2009. The study noted that Comal County’s elected officials fall almost universally at the bottom of the pay scale. Nine of the elected posts surveyed to include County commissioners are paid on average $25,000 less than their counterparts.

While Comal County enjoys one of the lowest tax rates of those surveyed, Commissioner Parker believes that while county officials may deserve more competitive wages, they still need to look after the taxpayer.

“We like to make sure that we manage our money wisely, and while we do believe our elected officials need to be paid a fair wage, we think it’s necessary to keep those costs to a minimum. The salaries are low compared to the number of things we do and given the education level of some of our elected officials, but we got into this to serve the community, not to serve ourselves.”
