Commissioner Leads County’s Effort to Preparing for 2010 Census NEW BRAUNFELS, TX - March 26, 2009: The New Braunfels Herald-Zeitung today reported that Comal County Commissioner Greg Parker, who is spearheading the county’s effort in preparing for the 2010 census, is hoping for a more precise count than in 2000. According to the news article which cites Sophia Azoubel, a partnership specialist for the national census bureau, 67 percent of Americans responded to the census survey in 2000, while only 64 percent responded in Texas and just 60 percent responded in Comal County. “We need to do better,” said Comal County Commissioner Greg Parker, “I personally would like to see as accurate and as impartial a count as possible.” The Commissioner is aiming for a 75% or higher responds for the 2010 census. |

The article also noted the importance of this census, because the data collected will redraw the county commissioner, state rep and congressional seats in all states. It will further aid in the distribution of billions of dollars in federal funds. It will also create a number of temporary jobs conducting its count. Again citing Sophia Azoubel, more than 300 people already have tested for census jobs in Comal County, and 50 are in training after the first phase of recruiting. Yet with a high demand for census jobs, the state of the economy, and a large amount of applicants have applied thereby causing them to enact a hiring freeze for now. Reacting to the concerns of some Comal County citizens, Commissioner Parker stressed those partisan organizations like ACORN will not be involved. “I personally would like to see and will work to have as accurate and as impartial a count as possible.”
