Proclamation - Living Legends Day - Herb Skoog

Proclamation

LIVING LEGENDS DAY - October 12, 2006

WHEREAS, the New Braunfels Foundation Trust has named C. Herb Skoog as a New Braunfels’ Living Legend; and

WHEREAS, C. Herb Skoog, made New Braunfels home in 1962, with wife Claudia, raising two daughters here, Cathy and Carol, and now grandfather to three girls. Always involved in radio, working in San Antonio as a disc jockey for KONO, where he became known as the "morning mayor", then to KENS radio as General Manager. Often hosting record hops in Landa Park. In 1964, Skoog was appointed General Manager of KGNB Radio eventually adding KNBT in New Braunfels. He became a driving force in it’s development, initiating two very popular local programs Reflections and Comment. He has been President of the New Braunfels ISD board, President of the New Braunfels Chamber of Commerce, including recipient of the Besserung Award, Hall of Honor, and organizer and first chairman of the Braunfels-New Braunfels Partnership Committee. He was a member of the founding board of the New Braunfels Housing Authority and past chairman of the Community Fund (United Way). Skoog was a member of the original committee which wanted to celebrate "Sausage Week"as a fundraiser. This fundraising activity eventually became Wurstfest and Herb became known as the "Director of Wurst Relations". Skoog has continually served in Wurstfest, now referred to as Opa Emeritus. The New Braunfels Herald-Zeitung’s named Herb Skoog an "Unsung Hero" in 1995. Earned for his five years as Chairman of the New Braunfels’ Sesquicentennial Celebration. Nothing he has done has rivaled this task of working with 500 volunteers on many organized committees. During the 1972 Flood, Herb’s constant vigilance during this disaster was recognized by the Chamber of Commerce President’s Award for Human Relations. The award is inscribed as "You became the focal point for community action, and the calming influence that saved many lives. Your cool judgment in knowing you must violate government regulations tosave your fellow citizens was the right decision. And your stamina, reassuring voice and life-saving information will never be forgotten by many in this community". Since Herb Skoog arrived in New Braunfels he has worked to help his fellow citizens. The "Voice of New Braunfels" is easily recognized by everyone in New Braunfels.

NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that the Commissioners’ Court of Comal County, duly convened and acting in its capacity as the governing body of Comal County, does hereby name October 12, 2006 as "Living Legends Day" in Comal County and recognizes C. Herb Skoog as an individual who has truly made a difference in Comal County.
