Proclamation - Recognizing the 30th Anniversary of the  Mid-Texas Symphony

Recognizing the 30th Anniversary of the

Mid-Texas Symphony

Whereas, the Mid-Texas Symphony is a regional professional symphony performing in the communities of New Braunfels and Seguin which was founded in 1978 by a group of music enthusiasts led by Anita Windecker, piano professor at Texas Lutheran University in Seguin; and

Whereas, the Mid-Texas Symphony is a modern-day manifestation of the tradition of orchestral and operatic music brought to this country by many of the 19th-century German settlers in this area; and

Whereas, some of the New Braunfels residents who worked to bring this dream to reality included Joe Rogers, Helgard Suhr-Hollis, Dr. Martin Stratemann, Jo Ann Lemmon, Bonnie Denson, Betty Stratemann, Jan Kotylo, Jan Kennady, Jane Isbell, Hilmar Tschoepe, Carolyn Weston, Cathy Talcott; and

Whereas, the budget for the Mid-Texas Symphony, which has always operated in the black, has grown from $12,000 in 1978 to $270,000 in 2008; and

Whereas, the Mid-Texas Symphony has been sponsoring a Young Artist Competition since 1983 to provide an opportunity for college-age musicians to compete to perform with the Symphony; and

Whereas, because of a generous grant from the Cecilia Young Willard Helping Fund, the Mid-Texas Symphony has been able to offer free children’s concerts since 1988 to children from New Braunfels Independent School District; Comal Independent School District; Seguin Independent School District; Navarro Independent School District; New Braunfels Christian Academy; St. James and Lifegate Schools; Sts. Peter & Paul Catholic School; and area home school students; and

Whereas, the Mid-Texas Symphony Guild Chapters in New Braunfels and Seguin have developed programs to raise funds for the Symphony as well as increase the exposure to symphonic music through the Debutante Program for high school age students; Cotillion Program for middle school students; and the Color of Music program for elementary school students; and

Whereas, the success of the Mid-Texas Symphony, like other American orchestras, has been the result of a joint effort of local skilled professionals and dedicated volunteers working together to promote and produce music in their communities; and

Whereas, the Mid-Texas Symphony is grateful for the support of its faithful audience and local business sponsors who have made this growth and longevity possible; and

Whereas, the Mid-Texas Symphony looks forward to its inaugural performance in the newly constructed New Braunfels Civic Convention Center during its 30th Anniversary Season.

NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that the Commissioners’ Court of Comal County, Texas, duly convened and acting in its capacity as the governing body of Comal County, does hereby recognize the Mid-Texas Symphony’s 30th Anniversary Season.

PASSED AND APPROVED this 7th day of February 2008.
