COMAL COUNTY
HISTORY
Comal County was formed in 1846 with
a predominantly German immigrant population. In 1850, it
is estimated that New Braunfels, the county seat, was
the 4th largest city in Texas. During the early years of
Comal County, farming and ranching were the primary
industries. After WWII, the beautiful Hill Country
comprising Comal County was recognized for it's tourism
potential. Canyon Lake was built by the Army Corps of
Engineers in 1964. Since that time, Canyon Lake and the
Guadalupe River have provided endless fun for tourists
and citizens alike.
