Dr. Edgar Alfred Grist, DVM
Dr. Edgar Alfred Grist, DVM, was born July 27, 1915, in Austin, Texas. He went to Agricultural and Mechanical College of Texas in College Station where he received a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine in June of 1937. He set up a private veterinary practice in New Braunfels, Texas, and became the first veterinarian in New Braunfels and Comal County. His veterinary practice lasted 33 years and at this location, 727 N. Live Oak, he established the New Braunfels Veterinary Hospital.
In addition to being a veterinarian, Dr. Grist worked for the Texas State Health Department in the Food and Drug Division and was the Texas State Veterinarian.
During World War II he worked with the Procurement and Assignment Service. He served for 15 years as the New Braunfels Chief Meat Inspector and 10 years as the Comal County Sanitarian. Dr. Grist also served on many local and state boards and associations providing leadership and support for causes that he felt passionate about.
He was the mastermind behind the Wurstfest festival that has evolved into a world renown event. Dr. Grist died September 19, 1994, leaving a legacy to the community and state that he loved as well as to his family.
