Comal County Sheriff's Office Corrections Division
The Comal County Jail, as all county jails in the State of Texas, is operated and maintained by the County Sheriff. The jail is located in the Comal County seat of New Braunfels, Texas. The first jail was in the historic limestone Comal County Courthouse in downtown New Braunfels, where inmates were housed from 1939 through 1985. In 1985, the Walter Fellers Law Enforcement Center Sheriff’s Office opened at 3005 W. San Antonio Street. This building contained the jail with a maximum occupancy of 144 beds. For decades, the County experienced tremendous growth and in order to keep pace, the jail was expanded and nearly doubled in size in 1999 to 337 beds. The new Comal County Jail, located at 3000 IH 35 South, opened August 2020, with 582 housing beds and the infrastructure for a total buildout between 900-1000 beds. The jail holds all Comal County inmates and has agreements in place to hold other county and federal inmates as space is available.
Mission:
The Comal County Jail is devoted to keeping our community safe by ensuring the safety and security of our inmates, through professional, highly trained Detention Officers that are upheld to the highest standards.
Vision:
The Comal County Corrections Division strives to be a premier detention facility bound to professional standards, fiscal responsibility, sound leadership, and cutting edge technology.
Corrections Emergency Response Team (C.E.R.T.):
The Comal County Sheriff’s Office Corrections Emergency Response Team or C.E.R.T. is made up of a Commander, Team Leader, Assistant Team Leader and twenty (20) Detention Officers. C.E.R.T. is a specially trained team of corrections officers that are used for high-risk incidents in the Comal County Jail. Their training and team cohesion makes the response to these incidents safer for both the staff and inmates. Each C.E.R.T. member receives training in high-risk escorts of inmates, emergency medical incidents, less lethal devices and munitions, riot and crowd control, defensive tactics, cell extractions, along with several other specialty trainings. All C.E.R.T. team members receive monthly training in order to deal with the various incidents that may arise in the jail.
Armed Corrections Officers:
Qualified Corrections Officers are selected to be a part of this program to relieve the burden of patrol Deputies having to watch inmates when an inmate needs to leave the facility for medical purposes, or while traveling to our County Court House for court. Each armed Corrections Officer is trained and certified to carry a firearm through the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement and receives annual training with our Patrol Section in all firearms trainings.
